Sure, it is fun to look at coupons and see what you want to buy based on what coupons you have, but that is the inefficient way to do it. And it can cost you more in the long run. In order to most effectively use coupons, you should follow a few tips to ensure that you truly are saving money, rather than spending more of it.

When you buy something just because you have a coupon for it, you are not in actuality saving money. In fact, you just spent money on an item you would not have bought under another circumstance. And you still will buy everything you need. So you’ve actually spent more. In order to prevent this from happening, you need to look at coupons as a tool, rather than a rationale.

Make your shopping list before you look through the coupons. Then it becomes a bargain hunt. Instead of looking through the coupons and then making your shopping list to include what you see, you already have a list of what you need. If you do not need to go immediately, take a whole day to carry the list with you and figure out what items you need. You will save more money if you only shop once a week for what you need, rather than constantly “running to the store for a couple of things” and coming back with a few extra items.

After you have made your list, go through the coupons. Only clip coupons for items that are on your list. That way, every coupon you clip is a money saver because you get a discount on something you would have bought anyway. It may require tremendous discipline at first, but after you see the true savings, you will be glad to be clipping coupons more effectively.
